NOAA announces the availability of a draft environmental assessment (EA) for the Olympic Coast Exploration Center (OCEC). The draft EA evaluates the potential environmental impacts of NOAA's proposed action to join Feiro Marine Life Center in its development of the OCEC. NOAA is requesting review and comment on the draft EA through July 27, 2026.

Proposed Action Description

The proposed action involves NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries providing partial funding for the construction of the approximately 14,000 square-foot OCEC being constructed by the Feiro Marine Life Center. The OCEC will be located on a 0.73-acre, previously developed industrial site in downtown Port Angeles. The facility will include public aquarium exhibits, classrooms, and life support systems, featuring a variety of North Pacific marine life.The purpose of the proposed action is to fulfill the purposes and policies of the National Marine Sanctuaries Act to enhance public awareness and support scientific research (16 U.S.C. § 1431[b][4-5]) for Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.
