Scientific research is one of Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary's most important contributions to marine conservation. Understanding how ecosystems work, trends in processes and natural populations and being able to make management decisions from the best available information. The challenge is that marine conservation science draws from a wide range of disciplines and requires the coordination of many subject-area experts.
Ongoing research involves taking inventory of what's in the Sanctuary. This includes knowing basic population characteristics, the occurrence or absence of specific organisms and the amount of various types of habitat. Once we understand what is there, monitoring those resources helps us understand the difference between natural trends and the effects of human actions.
We conduct experimental research to learn more about basic processes in nature, to sharpen our methods of science inquiry or to understand the consequences of management decisions.
Each field season, Sanctuary researchers mobilize ships, research boats, ROVs, sampling gear and other tools to gain new insights into the ocean's mysteries. And with every research project and expedition, they reveal new information and generate new questions crucial to our collective understanding of the Olympic Coast.
