BENTHIC MAPPING DATA CATALOG

Classification of habitats and characterization of the seabed is critical for supporting management, research, monitoring, and education within the national marine sanctuaries. Recognizing the importance for understanding the status of the benthic environment, coupled with the lack of existing data to do so, the OCNMS launched an active habitat mapping program in 2002 as an effort to begin characterizing sea floor substrates within its jurisdictional boundaries. Processed digital data are being provided for download. The GIS compilation will be revised, updated, and posted on-line as new data become available. File and Data Formats

The GIS data files require ESRI ArcExplorer, ArcView, or ArcInfo for viewing, although other commercial GIS packages may work. ArcExplorer is a Windows based application that ESRI licenses without charge. ArcView and ArcInfo are licensed applications that must be purchased. TIFF images can be viewed using any common image software package, however a GIS will be needed for geo-referencing through the world files.

The GIS data were compiled with ArcInfo (version 9.1, ESRI) in the UTM Zone 10 coordinate system using the WGS84 datum. Raster data layers are provided as ArcInfo GRID format or geo-registered TIFF (*.tif) images with associated world files (*.tfw). Point, line and polygon features are posted in ESRI coverage format. Each coverage has been converted to an interchange file (*.e00) and compressed with the UNIX gzip (*.gz) utility to provide for more reliable data transfer and smaller file sizes. Once downloaded, the files can be uncompressed on a Windows platform with any number of compression utilities such as Winzip, or by using the the 'gunzip' command in UNIX or LINUX. Interchange files need to be converted back to coverage format for viewing in the GIS, either through use of the 'Import from Interchange File' tool in the ArcGIS ArcToolbox, or by using the IMPORT71 utility in ArcView 3.x. Each data layer is accompanied by metadata (*.txt) and can be viewed using any text editor such as Wordpad or Notepad. Cruise reports are available in Adobe Acrobat format (*.pdf).

GIS data are listed by specific survey effort. Data layers are provided with a brief description, a link to the metadata, and a link to the downloadable data file. The two numbers following *.gz data file indicate file sizes when uncompressed and compressed (in parenthesis). File sizes are megabytes (M) unless otherwise indicated. Many files are VERY large and will take a significant amount of time to download. The *.gz files for the raster or vector layers contain a single interchange file that must be converted to a coverage as described above. The *tar.gz files for the sonar mosaics contain a tiff file (*.tif) and world file (*.tfw). To download compressed data files, right click on file and choose "Save link target..." It is recommended that you create a single new folder for which to unzip the files you wish to use.
