Wow, so that's what the continental shelf looks like? Yes! Beneath the ocean's
surface there's another whole landscape. Close to shore, it's a broad mantle that gently slopes
away from the Olympic Mountains. At about 600 feet deep, the shelf dramatically falls away. Ancient
river valleys are carved into the shelf creating the Juan de Fuca, Nitinat and Quinault canyons. To
the north, Swiftsure Bank rises to within 300 feet of the surface.
